About the Exhibition

“The very rich history of our beautiful Karachi dates back to the ancient Greeks. To them this city was known by many names. It was called “Krokola” and “Morontobara” during the time of Alexander the Great. This was the place where Alexander prepared his fleet for Babylonia. This is also the place where Alexander’s admiral Nearchus set sail for his celebrated voyage from the Indus river to the Persian Gulf following the Indian campaign of Alexander the Great, in 326–324 BC. It was later called “Barbarikon” during the Bactrian Kingdom and served as a major port for the kingdom. It was renamed as “Debal” from where Muhammed Bin Qasim led his conquering force into South Asia in AD 712. Many years later it was officially “founded” as “Kolachi” by Baloch tribes from Balochistan and Makran.

No matter what era of history you look at, it is the sea and the city’s dhows that have always defined Karachi’s nature, culture and importance. In this exhibition, I have tried to express this rich history with a presentation of boats where the vivid and sometimes serene colors depict the interesting times Karachi has experienced during its life.

May this city always remain this vibrant!”
